PROJECT UPDATES
Update 22-07-2021
The Architectural Design firm of Coles Associates Ltd. was awarded the architectural design contract for the Mental Health and Addictions Emergency Department and Short Stay Unit (MH&A ED/SSU) in the spring of 2021. The new MH&A ED/SSU will be situated at the QEH hospital adjacent and connected to the north east side of the existing Emergency Department (ED) above the current loading/receiving dock of the QEH. Design is underway.
Update 17-09-2021
The RFP (request for Proposal) for a design consultant for the new Mental Health and Addictions Acute Care Hospital and the new Mental Health and Addictions Wellness and Transition facility closed on Sept. 17, 2021. A selection process will be initiated over the next few months to be followed by contract award for the Project. The awarding of this contract will begin the design process for these two new facilities for the Mental Health and Addictions Division of HPEI.
Update 28-01-2022
We are excited to announce that the architectural design firm of HDR (Toronto), in partnership with Sable ARC (Charlottetown), has been awarded the design contract for the new Mental Health and Addictions Acute Care/ Life Skills Facility and the new Mental Health and Addictions Wellness and Transition facility. This design award is a significant milestone for the Mental Health and Addictions Redevelopment Project. Both of these new facilities will be located on the Mental Health and Addictions Campus near the current Hillsborough Hospital location. Upon completion and occupation of these two new facilities, the current Hillsborough Hospital is planned to be decommissioned.
Update 28-04-2022
The Mental Health and Addictions Redevelopment Project Management Team is excited to announce that construction is complete for the Addictions Extended Care Facility (the new Lacey House). This is the first facility to be complete for the Capital Redevelopment Project. This new facility is located on the Mental Health and Addictions Campus and will replace the current Lacey House with an additional 6 beds, bringing the total to 12 beds.
This new facility features space, appliances and equipment for Life Skills development, selfcare practice and recreational activity to assist clients on their recovery journey and includes accessible accommodation and programming space. The facility has a large kitchen and dining area, multiple client laundry facilities, a large group room and a family lounge. It also features a backyard yard patio and spacious yard. The facility is steps away from public transit routes and has a view of the Hillsborough River.
This is a significant milestone for the MH&A Redevelopment Project and for all Islanders!
Update 01-06-2022
As of June 1st, 2022 clients and staff have moved into the new Addictions Extended Care facility following an 8 week activation phase that included the installation of furniture, kitchen set up and the activation of all of the required building systems. This is the first facility of the Mental Health and Addictions Redevelopment Project to open to clients and staff.
Update 30-06-2022
The Project Management Office is excited to announce that local General Contracting firm Fitzgerald and Snow Ltd. has been awarded the construction contract for the new Mental Health and Addiction Emergency and Short Stay Unit. This new facility will be built as an addition to the QEH Emergency Department. Construction will begin this summer (2022). The PMO is working closely with QEH administration and staff to ensure hospital services are not disrupted during the construction period. This is the third mental health and addictions facility being constructed as part of the Mental Health and Addictions Redevelopment Project.
Update 29-07-2022
Construction began on the new Mental Health and Addiction Emergency and Short Stay Unit on July 26, 2022. This new facility will be built as an addition to the QEH Emergency Department.
Update 10-08-2022
The Mental Health and Addictions Redevelopment Project Management Team is excited to announce that construction has been completed for the Social Housing: Structured Housing and Day Programming Facility. This is the second facility completed as part of the Mental Health and Addictions Redevelopment Project.
The Structured Housing and Day Program facility is located on the Mental Health and Addictions Campus. When it becomes operational, two new mental health programs will be offered in this facility – an 8-bed Structured Housing program and a 20-space day treatment program.
The Structured Housing and Day Programming facility features programming and residential spaces and equipment to enable skills development for effective and supported transitions of mental health clients back to the community. The facility has a large learning kitchen and dining areas, client laundry facilities, a large multipurpose room, several smaller group learning rooms, a family lounge and clinical offices. It also features a spacious backyard and yard patio. The facility is steps away from public transit routes and has a view of the Hillsborough River. All supports are designed to lead to healthy, independent living.
This is a significant milestone for the Mental Health and Addictions Redevelopment Project and for all Islanders!
Update 29-08-2023
A Prequalification Construction tender was issued on August 29, 2023, in preparation for issuing the full construction tender for the new mental health and addictions hospital, the Mental Health & Addictions Acute Care and Life Skills Center along with the Mental Health and Addictions Wellness and Transition Center. This prequalification process will ensure all construction tender submissions will have the capacity and experience to build facilities of this magnitude. It is anticipated that a full tender for construction for these two facilities will be issued in early 2024.
Update 15-09-2023
The RFP (request for Proposal) for the design of the new Mental Health and Addictions Child and Youth Inpatient Unit, to be located at the QEH, closed on Sept 15, 2023. Submissions are currently being evaluated and it is anticipated that this contract will be awarded by the end of 2023.
Update 21-09-2023
Phase II MH&A Campus Road Work between Murchison House and Structured Programming began on September 21 and is anticipated to continue until mid-December 2023. This work includes installing underground water, sewer, and electrical services in anticipation of the construction of the Mental Health & Addictions Acute Care and Life Skills Center (the new hospital) and the Mental Health and Addictions Wellness and Transition Center to begin in 2024.
Update 28-11-2023
The Project Management office is exited to announce that the PEI architectural firm Coles & Associates has been awarded the design contract for the new Mental Health and Addictions Child and Youth Inpatient Unit. This unit will be located in a renovated space at the QEH.
Update 20-09-2024
The Department of Health and Wellness and the Project Management Office (PMO) is excited to announce the construction contract for the new Mental Health and Addictions Acute Care and Life Skills Center (ACLS) and the Mental Health and Addictions Wellness and Transition Center (ADSSH) has been awarded to PCL Construction. This contract signifies a major milestone for the Mental Health and Addictions Redevelopment Project and for Island residents.
PCL Construction is a Canadian based construction company that is 100% employee owned. With a strong commitment to safety, innovation and sustainability, PCL has constructed many hospitals and health care facilities across Cananda and beyond.
Throughout the contract process, careful consideration has been given to safety not only for those on the work site, but also for the patients, clients and staff who may be on the campus during construction and the public who enjoy the walking trails and beauty of the campus on a daily basis.
